As part of Dementia Action Week, we’re highlighting some invaluable advice from our Training & Development Manager, Sue Brown, on how to support individuals living with dementia with empathy, respect, and understanding.
At Bluebird Care, all of our care team receive specialist training in dementia care, equipping them with the tools to support each customer in a way that promotes dignity and confidence. Here are just a few of Sue’s expert tips:
🔹 Avoid overloading someone with too many questions—it can be difficult for them to process and respond.
🔹 Don’t argue or disagree; even small disagreements can cause unnecessary distress.
🔹 Never assume a person with dementia lacks capacity. Many can still make important decisions—like what they’d like for lunch.
🔹 Communication isn’t always verbal. Pay attention to body language, expressions, and other non-verbal cues—they matter.
Supporting someone with dementia takes patience, compassion, and the right knowledge—something we pride ourselves on offering at Bluebird Care every day.
