Winter puts additional strain on the health service, making it essential to plan ahead. By taking simple steps, we can better manage our health at home and make the most of NHS services when needed.

Creating a safe and healthy home environment!

Managing Medications and Prescriptions

For those with repeat prescriptions, electronic repeat dispensing (eRD) ensures that medications are ready for collection at the pharmacy when needed. This service provides peace of mind, especially during busy periods like bank holidays.

You can order repeat prescriptions or change your nominated pharmacy using the NHS App or by visiting the NHS website, where you’ll also find details of pharmacies open over the holidays.

Essential Medicine Cabinet Checklist

Having a well-stocked medicine cabinet can help manage minor illnesses and injuries at home. Ensure it is kept locked or out of children’s reach. Here are some key items to include:

  • Pain relief: Aspirin, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen

  • Cold and flu remedies: Cough medicine, Decongestant

  • Allergy relief: Antihistamine tablets

  • Topical treatments: Hydrocortisone cream, Antibiotic ointment

  • First aid essentials: Bandages, Sterile gauze, Medical tape, Antiseptic, Cotton balls/swabs, Scissors, Tweezers, Ice and heat packs

  • Prescription medicines: Keep prescriptions with medications for reference

Every household’s needs may vary. If unsure, consult your local pharmacy for advice. You can also find NHS guidance on what to keep in a home first aid kit.
