As part of World Alzheimer's Month, we want to share some simple, thoughtful ways to help make everyday life a little easier for someone living with dementia.- Stick to a routine – Bathing, dressing, and mealtimes feel more manageable when they happen at regular times each day.
- Write it down – Help them keep a notebook or calendar for to-do lists, appointments, and reminders.
- Plan enjoyable activities – Try to schedule activities they love at the same time each day to create rhythm and comfort.
- Support with medications – A visual reminder system (like a chart or organiser) can make a big difference.
- Keep it simple – Choose comfortable, easy-to-manage clothing (elastic waistbands, Velcro fasteners, etc.) to promote independence.
- Safe bathing – A sturdy shower chair and gentle, step-by-step instructions can help make washing a calm and safe experience.
- Create a calm mealtime – Familiar places, consistent routines, and unrushed time to eat can reduce distress.
- Most of all, be kind, patient, and reassuring. A calm, respectful approach helps preserve dignity and creates a sense of safety.
