A Guide for Families on spotting the early signs of Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition that can affect movement, balance, and coordination. While it’s most common in older adults, recognising the early signs can make a big difference in managing symptoms and improving quality of life. Whether you're a family member, friend, or care professional, knowing what to look out for can help ensure your loved one gets the right support at the earliest opportunity.

Common early signs of Parkinson’s Disease

Tremors or Shaking
One of the most noticeable early signs is a slight tremor or shaking, often beginning in the fingers, hands, or limbs on one side of the body. These movements may seem subtle at first but can gradually become more pronounced.

Slower Movements (Bradykinesia)
Everyday tasks may start to feel slower and harder to complete. This can include things like walking, buttoning clothes, or preparing meals. Movements may feel more deliberate or delayed.

Stiffness and Muscle Cramps
Muscle stiffness or a feeling of inflexibility can appear in the arms, legs, or neck. This may make turning over in bed or getting up from a chair more difficult. You might also notice fine motor tasks like tying shoelaces becoming a struggle.

Sleep Difficulties
Restless nights, difficulty falling or staying asleep, and unusual movements during sleep, such as kicking or jerking, can be early signs. Conditions like restless leg syndrome may also appear.

Persistent Fatigue
Many people with early Parkinson’s report feeling tired all the time, even after a good night's sleep. This type of fatigue isn’t just physical - it can also affect motivation and mental energy.

Loss of Smell
A reduced sense of smell can often be an early warning sign, even years before more noticeable symptoms develop. You might notice someone no longer recognising favourite foods or familiar scents.

Changes in Handwriting
Known as micrographia, handwriting may become smaller, more cramped, or difficult to read. This change often happens gradually and may be one of the first signs that something is different.

Bladder and Bowel Changes
Constipation or sudden urges to use the bathroom, especially during the night, can point to changes in the nervous system related to Parkinson’s.

Mood Changes
An increase in anxiety, low mood, or feelings of depression can occur even before other physical symptoms become apparent.

Posture and Balance Issues
Early signs may include a stooped or hunched posture, shuffling walk, or stumbling more often. Difficulty with balance can become more noticeable over time.

What to do if you are concerned

If you or someone you care about is showing one or more of these signs, it’s important not to jump to conclusions. These symptoms don’t always mean Parkinson’s disease is present. However, it’s wise to speak with a GP who can provide advice and refer you to a specialist if needed.

Supporting someone living with Parkinson’s

An early diagnosis can open the door to treatments and lifestyle changes that help manage the condition more effectively. Encouraging regular exercise, a balanced diet, and staying socially and mentally active can all have a positive impact. Emotional support is just as important, simply being there can make a world of difference.
