The scorching summer has been and gone and it’s time for autumn to take over. The evenings are already becoming darker, and the leaves are crispy and ready to cover the streets with a mosaic of orange and gold. But, whilst it’s time for cosy evenings and dreams of the festive season, it’s important to make sure your home is safe and free from clutter that could lead to falls. Here at Bluebird Care NEW Devon, we’re here to help with a handy checklist to make sure your home is fall-proof this fall.
Did you know that six out of ten falls happen in the home or garden? Like us, our homes get old too and as the years go by, carpets become warn and clutter builds up which can present a very real risk for falls. It can take just a few minutes to fall-proof your home, just follow this handy guide:
Lighting
As the darker seasons approach, you must pay attention to the lighting around your home. 60-year-old eyes need three times more light than 20-year-old eyes. Here are some simple ways you can make sure your home is well-lit to keep you safe…
- Consult a trusted, professional electrician about your lighting options such as branched lights to replace single bulbs which will increase light without glare.
- Avoid trailing cables from lamps that could pose a trip hazard.
- Consider installing two-way switches on the landing/hall and/or extra stair lighting.
- Always use your bedside light when getting up in the night! If the switch isn’t easily accessible, consider a touch activated lamp or keep a good torch by the bed too.
- Never walk around in the dark, if you regularly get up to use the loo just keep the landing light on.
Living Areas
It’s important to keep all living areas clean and tidy to allow you to move around your home every day safely and with ease. Here’s just a few things to look out for…
- Check all rugs have a non-slip underlay and replace worn ones. You should also consider replacing frayed carpets or get someone in to tack them down.
- Use cable tidies to organise jumbled wires by the TV, computer or speakers. Get someone to help you tape trailing extension leads to skirting boards.
- Clear away clutter, especially in the hall, landing and doorways.
- Never store items on the stairs.
- It’s surprising how many people trip over their pets – buy them a bright collar with a bell to alert you when they’re around.
Margaret, a customer based in Exeter recently had some hand rails installed and is already noticing a difference: “I always hated the idea of hand rails in my house, I thought it was a sign I was getting old. But making a few small changes has given me more freedom and confidence when moving around.”
Kitchens & Bathrooms
- If you find you’re continually reaching up for things, try rearranging the cupboards so that items you use frequently are always within reach.
- Clear up spills and messes straight away.
- Always use a non-slip mat in the bath or shower.
- Consider installing grab rails in the bathroom.
Garden
- Keeps paths free of moss and leaves and repair any cracks in paving.
- Ensure your back and front doors are well lit.
- Consider installing safety rails for steps.
