Meet Sharon and her Mum! Sharon had been struggling to balance her busy work life while still dedicating enough time to her Mother's wellbeing, when also living over an hour's drive away.

I am a full-time professional, working in Exeter, and my Mum is in her late 70s, living alone with two dogs in Barnstaple.

Mum is physically quite frail, and after losing my stepdad, she became very down and stopped being as active. She regularly complained of feeling unwell and during this time found out she also needed a hip replacement.

“I was constantly worried about her...”

I was really struggling with head and heart stuff, I couldn’t be there all the time as I live an hour and a half away. She blankly refused to have a Carer go in to see her, as she “didn’t need care” in her words.

Sharon and her Mum’s story

What made you choose technology-enabled care?

When I spoke to Bluebird Care, tech-enabled care was perfect, a non-intrusive solution for Mum that would give me reassurance. Having a Carer go in weekly to check the equipment meant Mum didn’t see it as care.

At first, Mum was initially very aware of the sensors around her home and it was a constant topic of conversation. This concerned me, but within a couple of weeks, she effectively forgot it was there.

“...a complete game changer for us.”

I no longer need to call every morning to check Mum is up, had breakfast and her pills, which removes a lot of pressure on our relationship. I have set the reassurance alerts to come to my phone, so I know she is active throughout the day.

Now, when I go and visit, we are able to chat like Mother and daughter and enjoy our time together.”

Would you recommend this service to other families?

Absolutely, it has been brilliant not just for me but Mum, she’s gained her confidence back to do more things, and she actually enjoys the visits from the carer. When the time comes, and Mum needs more professional care, she is already comfortable with them popping in, which takes a weight off my shoulders.

About Technology Enabled Care

We use Access Assure’s non-intrusive, smart system to help us support our customers and reassure their families.

This system has no cameras or recording devices, instead, it uses a series of sensors and smart devices which track activity throughout the home. The data is then passed through an AI program which learns usual patterns and can flag anything of concern or changes in normal activity.

Connection and monitoring

The assistive care app allows chosen family members to monitor activity alerts and movement throughout the day and night. We will monitor weekly, which is included as a 30 minute home visit, and make suggestions on the level of professional care required based on our observations.

This service includes:

  • Smart home hub

  • Door sensors

  • Smart plugs

  • 30 min care visit per week

  • Unlimited user family app
