This October, our Director of Finance, Ray, is taking on a personal challenge. He will be walking a minimum of 5k every single day. It’s not just about fitness - it’s about raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer research, a cause that’s become deeply personal to him.
💬 Ray’s Journey
Last December, Ray was listening to a radio interview with Sir Chris Hoy, the Olympic cyclist, who had been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. As he described his symptoms, Ray realised that they mirrored his own. He booked a GP appointment that same week, and two weeks later, had a PSA blood test.
The results came back borderline, prompting further urological tests. That’s when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer requiring treatment. Over the following months, he underwent a series of tests and began daily radiotherapy in July, which he completed in early August. He’s very hopeful that the treatment has done its job.
Throughout this journey, the NHS has been incredible. From my first appointment to the completion of treatment, it took just eight months. The staff at Axminster, Ottery St Mary, and the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital were compassionate and professional every step of the way. A special thanks to the radiotherapy team at the RDE Oncology Centre - they were truly outstanding.
