Celebrating Older People’s Day: Honouring Alister’s Extraordinary Life of Service

On Older People’s Day, we took a moment to reflect on the incredible lives and contributions of older adults who have shaped our world. We celebrated the story of Alister, a man whose life of service and dedication stands as a testament to bravery, determination, and love for his country.

The photograph shown here was taken in 1973/74 when Alister was 42 years old. His proud smile, standing tall with an award in hand, symbolises a lifetime of remarkable achievements. Alister’s journey began in his youth when, after finishing school, his father encouraged him to pursue an apprenticeship. Though he successfully completed training as a draftsman, Alister’s heart was set on something far more adventurous - he dreamt of serving in the skies.

That dream led him to the Royal Air Force, where he dedicated 27 years of his life to protecting others. Starting as a pilot and later transitioning to an air gunner on the legendary Lancaster bombers, Alister’s bravery knew no bounds. In the latter years of his service, he took on the critical role of winch man in the RAF's Search and Rescue unit, rescuing people in perilous situations and bringing them to safety.

One such rescue stands out as a defining moment in Alister’s career. It earned him recognition not just at home but internationally. The photograph captures him receiving an award from none other than President Nixon at The White House, a significant honour bestowed upon him for his heroic participation in a rescue mission. Alister was also awarded the prestigious Air Force Cross by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace - an award given only to those who have demonstrated outstanding bravery in the skies.

For his family, Alister is not just a man in a uniform or a name in the history books; he is a beloved father and a personal hero. His daughter shares, “We have a copy of this picture in his room for all to see. He really is our hero.”

As we celebrated Older People’s Day, Alister’s story reminded us of the invaluable contributions and rich experiences that older adults bring to our lives. Their wisdom, bravery, and resilience continue to inspire us every day. Alister’s legacy, filled with courage and compassion, is a shining example of what it means to live a life of purpose and service.

We honour him today, not only for his past achievements but also for the memories and inspiration he continues to provide to those who know and love him. Thank you, Alister, for your service and for being a true hero.
