This case study highlights the transformative power of Oomph, an online person-centred software platform, in unlocking a passion for music within a care recipient named NG. NG, previously perceived as primarily engaging with YouTube videos on his iPad, rediscovered his love for singing through the Oomph platform and is now a thriving member of a local choir.

NG’s Story:

NG, a home care customer, regularly uses his iPad, primarily for watching YouTube videos. While this provided some engagement, his care experts sought to find activities that would offer deeper personal fulfilment and social connection. When Bluebird Care began their trial period with Oomph, an online platform designed to enhance the lives of individuals receiving care, both at home and in care home settings.

During the trial period with Oomph, NG's profile was created and his interests explored. Our Marketing Manager, Kate McLellan attended NG’s home to introduce him to Oomph, which is where we discovered NG’s love for music. He told us that he used to sing a lot in his younger years and enjoyed listening to and singing along with a multitude of different genres.

Recognising NG's enthusiasm for music, the care team, using information gathered through Kate’s time spent with NG at his home began researching local opportunities in the community for NG to engage with music. This research led them to the Backworth Male Voice Choir, a well-established and respected choir in North Tyneside.

NG was introduced to the Backworth Male Voice Choir, and the experience proved to be a resounding success. He immediately connected with the music, the camaraderie, and the sense of belonging within the group. He quickly became an active member, attending weekly rehearsals with enthusiasm.

Impact and Outcomes:

NG's involvement with the Backworth Male Voice Choir has had a profound impact on his life. He is now actively engaged in:

  • Weekly Rehearsals: NG regularly attends rehearsals, demonstrating his commitment and passion for singing.
  • Public Performances: He participates in the choir's performances across the North East of England.
  • Social Connection: Joining the choir has provided NG with a strong social network, which he did not have prior to joining the choir.
  • Increased Wellbeing: It appears that NG’s confidence has been boosted from his participation in the choir, with him regularly sharing updates and newly learned songs with his care experts.

Conclusion:

NG's story is a testament to the power of person-centred care and the effectiveness of platforms like Oomph in uncovering hidden talents and passions. By providing a structured and engaging way to explore individual interests, Oomph facilitated the discovery of NG's love for music, leading to a significant improvement in his quality of life. His journey highlights the importance of looking beyond surface-level engagement and actively seeking opportunities for individuals to have more ‘magic moments’ in life.
