At Bluebird Care Peterborough & Oundle, we’re always looking for ways to nurture connection, spark conversation, and bring joy to our customers’ days. That’s why we’ve recently introduced Memory Mondays — a new initiative encouraging our care experts to ask a thoughtful question each week, helping customers to share and relive cherished memories.
Our first Memory Monday question was a simple but heartwarming one:
“Who was your first best friend?”
The responses were full of warmth, laughter, and nostalgia — wonderful reminders of the friendships that shape our lives.
Mrs JH of Stamford shared a truly special story — she’s stayed in touch with not one, but three friends who have literally known each other all their lives, as they were all born on the same day, in the same hospital!
Customer MC from Peterborough interpreted the question beautifully, speaking about her husband, who she described as her best friend — a touching reminder that sometimes friendship and love go hand in hand.
KM from Stamford recalled how she had five friends at school — all with the same first name! She smiled remembering the fun they had and how she’s still in touch with most of them today.
Customer CR in Laxton reflected that she’s been lucky to have many friends throughout her life, each one bringing something special, though she never had just one “best” friend.
Mrs MP of Stamford fondly spoke about her best friend, someone she met at the school gates when her children were young — a friendship that has stood the test of time.
Why reminiscing matters
Encouraging older people to share memories isn’t just enjoyable — it’s hugely beneficial for emotional and cognitive wellbeing. Whether someone is living with dementia or not, reminiscing can:
- Stimulate the mind and strengthen memory recall
- Boost mood and reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness
- Encourage conversation and connection
- Reinforce a sense of identity and self-worth
For those living with dementia, gentle reminiscence activities like Memory Mondays can also help improve communication and offer comfort through familiar stories and feelings.
The power of connection
At Bluebird Care, we believe care is about much more than practical support — it’s about understanding each person’s life story and celebrating who they are. Initiatives like Memory Mondays give our care experts a wonderful way to connect on a deeper, more personal level with the people they support.
After all, everyone has a story to tell — and sharing those stories brings us all closer together.
If you’d like to find out more about the care and support we provide, we’d love to hear from you.
