Your Options with Self-Directed Support (SDS) are as follows:
Option 1 – Direct Payments
You receive the budget directly from your local council and take full control of your care arrangements. You manage how the money is spent and who provides your support. Bluebird Care can work with you under this arrangement, delivering your support plan exactly how you choose.
Option 2 – Individual Service Fund (ISF)
You choose your care provider, but the local council pays them directly. The provider then manages your support in line with your agreed plan. We’re happy to deliver care this way, giving you choice and flexibility while we take care of the details.
Option 3 – Council-Arranged Support
Your local social work team manages your care. They arrange and deliver your support through council services or an approved third-party provider. This option suits those who prefer council-led coordination.
Option 4 – A Mix of Options
Flexible Support That Works for You Self-Directed Support (SDS) is designed to fit around your life. You can choose to combine different options to create the right level of control and support.

If you're thinking about accessing SDS, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand the process. We can support you at every stage, including making that first contact.
Step 1 – Get in Touch
Contact your local Social Work department to begin the process. Need help making contact? Bluebird Care can support you.
Step 2 – Assessment and Budget
A Social Worker will assess your needs and decide if you’re eligible for support. This assessment produces a Points Total, which is used to calculate your SDS budget—the amount of money available for your care.
Step 3 – Creating Your Support Plan
Working with your Social Worker, you'll design a support plan that outlines the care and support you want to receive.
Step 4 – Finalising the Plan
Once your plan is agreed, you’ll receive a copy detailing: Your agreed outcomes, how your care will be delivered, how your budget will be used.
