5th December 2024

On 6th December 2024, Louisa ‘Joan’ Alexander, one of Gravesend’s most remarkable residents, celebrated a milestone that few achieve: her 100th birthday. Joan’s life is a story of resilience, intelligence, and an unwavering dedication to her country.

As a former codebreaker at the legendary Bletchley Park during the Second World War, Joan played a vital role in securing Allied victory in Europe. Her extraordinary achievements and inspirational outlook on life have now been celebrated far and wide, with her incredible milestone even featured on Kent Online News.

From Enigma to Everyday Inspiration

In the early 1940s, as Britain faced one of its darkest hours, Joan made the courageous decision to join the secretive team at Bletchley Park. Working tirelessly in complete secrecy, she contributed to breaking the German ‘Enigma’ code – a pivotal success in the Allied war effort.

For two years, Joan’s sharp mind and determination helped decode critical messages, saving countless lives and changing the course of history. To this day, her work, alongside her fellow codebreakers, is recognised as one of the most significant contributions to the war effort.

A Life Well Lived in Gravesend

Joan made Gravesend her home in 1973, finding a warm and welcoming community where she has lived ever since. A passionate advocate for embracing life’s opportunities, she has always cherished Britain’s rich history and continues to learn something new every day – even at 100 years old.

Even at 100, there’s always more to discover,” Joan shared during her birthday celebrations. This motto encapsulates her vibrant spirit and determination to make the most of every moment.

A Century of Celebration

Joan’s milestone birthday was marked in style, surrounded by her friends, family, and her caring team from Bluebird Care Gravesham and Dartford. The festivities honoured not only her incredible achievements during the war but also her continued zest for life and wisdom.

Her advice to younger generations? “Embrace every moment.” Simple yet powerful words from someone who has lived through some of history’s most challenging and transformative times.

Joan’s remarkable journey was rightly celebrated by the local community and featured on Kent Online News, inspiring readers with her heroic contributions and uplifting philosophy.
