What is Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)?
An Acquired Brain Injury refers to any damage to the brain that occurs after birth. Unlike developmental conditions, ABI happens suddenly and can be caused by a range of factors, including:
Trauma (e.g., road traffic accidents, falls, assaults)
Stroke
Tumours or infections
Oxygen deprivation
Unlike a developmental condition, ABI happens suddenly and can have life-changing effects on:
Memory and concentration
Communication and speech
Mobility and coordination
Emotional regulation and behaviour
Day-to-day independence
No two brain injuries are the same, which makes personalised and flexible care absolutely essential.
Why Specialist Training Matters
Recovery from a brain injury is often complex and unique to each individual. That’s why we’ve invested in ABI training for our team – giving them the knowledge and practical skills to:
Support rehabilitation in both the home and community
Communicate with empathy and understanding
Promote independence while ensuring safety
Collaborate effectively with families, therapists, and case managers
Our Commitment to ABI Care
At Bluebird Care Cardiff and The Vale, we’ve recently invested in specialist ABI training for our team, providing them with a deeper understanding of the complexities of brain injury and the practical skills needed to deliver the right support. We know that living with ABI brings challenges not just for individuals, but also for their families - from the first days in intensive care through to rehabilitation and life at home.
Our mission is to deliver compassionate, expert care that empowers people to live as independently as possible while feeling supported every step of the way. By raising awareness and ensuring our teams are highly trained, we’re proud to play a part in improving recovery outcomes and enhancing quality of life for those living with brain injury.
