The York and Scarborough team recently took part in a powerful and immersive Dementia Virtual Experience, delivered through a specialist mobile unit known as the Dementia Bus.

The Dementia Bus, operated by Training 2 Care, is designed to provide participants with a first-hand understanding of what it can feel like to live with dementia. The mobile unit recreates sensory challenges commonly faced by individuals with the condition – including changes in perception, confusion, communication difficulties, and physical disorientation – using a carefully controlled environment.

During the session, team members were fitted with headphones, glasses, and gloves to simulate various cognitive and sensory impairments. They were then asked to complete everyday tasks, such as finding objects or following instructions, all while navigating the confusion and frustration that those with dementia may experience on a daily basis.

The experience left a lasting impact on the team.

This hands-on training is part of the York and Scarborough team's commitment to delivering empathetic and person-centred care. By increasing awareness and understanding, the team aims to improve communication, patience, and support for those living with dementia and their families.

The Dementia Virtual Experience is widely praised for its effectiveness in promoting empathy and changing attitudes towards care. It reinforces the importance of compassionate, informed approaches – not just in care settings, but in wider society as well.

The York and Scarborough team look forward to using the insight gained to enhance their dementia care practices and continue raising awareness throughout the community.
